Designing a Home Together: When Interiors Become a Relationship Test
Designing or renovating a home as a couple can be one of the most exciting projects you take on together… and one of the most testing.
Big decisions, emotional investment and a lot of opinions tend to land all at once. It’s completely normal for different tastes, priorities and ways of living to surface during this process.
In my work, I often act as a neutral third party - helping couples move away from “I like this / I don’t like that” and towards a shared vision for how they want their home to feel and function. Whether it’s aligning on colour palettes, balancing comfort with style (sofas are always a big one!), or simply creating a space that works for two different lifestyles, good design can be a powerful mediator.
When approached with openness and a bit of curiosity, the process doesn’t just lead to a better home - it can actually strengthen how you make decisions together.
If you’re embarking on a renovation as a couple, my advice is simple: start with how you want to live, not just how you want things to look.
Start With Your Eyes Wide Open: Why Early-Stage Budgeting Is the Key to a Successful Renovation
Start With Your Eyes Wide Open
One of the most powerful shifts I’ve seen in renovation success comes from budgeting early—before committing to detailed design work. By outlining a high-level scope, turning it into a contractor brief and bringing trade teams in early, homeowners get realistic estimates upfront. This clarity helps in conversations with banks, valuers and financial advisors, prevents scope from drifting and gives confidence around what’s genuinely achievable.
I now build detailed budget sheets early in the process—covering structural work, fixtures, fittings and all the small but essential items. It allows clients to prioritise what matters most and avoid spiralling costs driven by mid-project changes.
With the holiday season approaching, many people start daydreaming about improvements at home. If you’re considering a renovation next year, begin with the step that sets everything else up for success:
Set a realistic budget first.
